The Supreme Court Nomination: What Happens Next?

The Supreme Court, established in 1789, has appellate jurisdiction over all federal courts and over state court cases involving federal law. It consists of a Chief Justice and eight associate justices. As of 2016, there had been 161 formal nominations, 124 confirmations and 122 Supreme Court Justices. 39 of the 43 presidents appointed at least one justice. When a President nominates a person to the Supreme Court, he informs Senate of this nomination in a letter. Once a nomination is sent to the Senate, members of the Senate vote on the nominee. Nominees can either be confirmed or declined. They can also be in a "pending" status, be withdrawn prior to their confirmation vote, have "no action" taken or "rejected". President Trump is expected to name his candidate to replace Justice Antonin Scalia. Here’s what to expect in the nomination process.
