Fellow attorney and friend R Kyle Alagood on school lunches, and how a kindhearted principal let him eat lunch one day, even though his family was too poor to afford the meal plan. Do you know a hungry child? Be kind, too. https://www.facebook.com/rkylealagood/posts/658825530965763
No child should be denied a hot lunch at any school in the United States for any reason. After my parents divorced, my mom's pride kept her from signing me up for free lunches at school for a year or more. I remember the first time the lunch lady told me I couldn't eat (there was no cold sandwich for past-due accounts) because my bill was more than $25. I cried and cried. Unlike thousands of other poor kids, I was lucky enough to have a principal who deeply respected my family and let me eat that day anyway. My aunt ultimately paid the first bill, but the scenario repeated each time my account reached $25 past due. I lived in fear of the lunch line, worried that I would be publicly shamed for being poor. No child in this wealthy nation should go hungry at school (or anywhere for that matter). We will collectively be judged for how we treat the least among us.
